China Warns Iris-Scanning Crypto Projects Pose National Security Risk

China has warned against the growing use of biometric data by projects related to cryptography, warning that IRIS ‘sweeping programs operating under the cover of the distribution of digital assets can threaten personal confidentiality and even national security.

In a public security bulletin published on Wednesday, the Chinese States Ministry of States (MSS) described several emerging risks associated with biometric recognition technologies, including the collection of data on facials, fingerprints and iris.

The MSS cited an unidentified business abroad which, “under the guise of the publication of cryptocurrency tokens, scanned and collected IRIS information to world users, then transferred the data source”. Officials said it was “a threat to personal information security and even national security”.

The reference seemed to indicate the world of Sam Altman, known for collecting data from IRIS in exchange for his world token (WLD) in the world. According to his website, World has operated in 160 countries, although China is not one.

IRIS data leaks are irreversible

The MSS has described the recognition of the iris as a high precision biometric method commonly used in sensitive areas. These features also make it an attractive target for improper use. Once compromised, these biometric “keys” are almost impossible to change.

Facial recognition has also been reported as a critical concern. “Inappropriate storage of relevant data can lead to leaks, which not only endangers privacy and security of goods, but also threatening national security,” warned the bulletin.

Officials have cited cases of foreign intelligence agencies that falsified facial data to carry out spying operations, including the infiltration of key workplaces.

“While biometric identification brings convenience,” concluded the opinion, “we must attach great importance to its safety and be careful when providing personal biometric information.”

Vitalik offers a pluralist digital identity document to protect privacy

In June, Vitalik Buterin proposed a new concept called pluralist identity, aimed at preserving privacy and inclusiveness in digital identification. The co-founder of Ethereum has expressed its concerns that even confidentiality-oriented systems using zero knowledge evidence (ZK) could present risks if they apply rigid identity models, one per person.

Buterin warned that requiring a single traceable identifier can eliminate pseudonymat and expose individuals to surveillance of governments or employers. He also rejected the “proof of wealth” as a fair verification method, arguing that it promotes the rich and excludes others.
