Crypto Adoption Grows in Bhutan Despite Internet Hurdles

In a country where the ancient monasteries neglect the misty mountains, cryptocurrency quietly makes part of everyday life.

During the Binance Crypto-Powerred Tour in the Kingdom of Bhutan, Cointelegraph traveled through the capital of Bhutan, Thimpu and the popular Cultural and Tourist District of Paro to assess the interest of the crypto base.

In Changyul Park and a local four-star hotel, Cintelelegraph saw in the first hand how tourists and residents pay with the crypto only months after the crypto-exchange of cryptographic payments in the country.

On May 7, Binance Pay joined the Bhoutan’s DK Bank to allow users with Binance accounts to pay flights, hotels, visas, sustainable development costs and even streets on the street using Bitcoin (BTC), BNB (BNB), USDT (USDT) and other crypto assets.

The president of the DK Bank, Ugy Gelephuin, said that nearly 1,000 merchants had registered to accept the crypto as part of the program.

Bhoutani citizens are not starting to learn more about cryptography

Although crypto payments are increasing, a large part of the Bhutan economy remains based on species, the local tourist guide Kuenley Dorjee told Cintelegraph.

He said that people are only starting to wrap their heads from what crypto really means, but are impatient to embrace digital transformation.

“It’s much easier to use and the costs are better,” said Dorjee. He praised the adoption of the crypto in the country and credited the monarch of Bhutan, King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, for encouraging innovation.

The progressive position of Bhutan’s cryptography took place under Jigme, the current “Druk Gyalpo” of the country, which is literally translated into “Dragon King”. During its reign, Bhutan implemented projects supported by the State such as hydroelectric bitcoin extraction and accumulated crypto titles exceeding 12,000 BTC.

In 2023, local reports revealed that Bhutan has undermined BTC with hydroelectricity since 2019, when the Bitcoin price was around $ 5,000. On January 8, the Special Administrative Region of Gelephu (SAR) of Bhutan, also known as Gelephu Mindfulness City (GMC), revealed plans to set up a reserve of strategic crypto.

Internet instability A crypto adoption road dam

Despite growing interest, unstable internet connectivity remains a key challenge. Cointelegraph has encountered incoherent WiFi connection speeds in Paro and Thimpu. Other participants in the crypto tour reported similar experiences.

Reddit’s local discussions have also highlighted the country’s internet connectivity problems. A Reddit user described the Internet connection to Bhutan as “horribly slow, tedious and requires all the patience of existence”.

With cryptographic payments requiring stable internet connections, connection problems can cause disturbances when paying digital assets.

On a note full of hope, the Internet Supplier Satellite Starlink was launched in the country on February 17, according to Bhoutan Broadcasting Local Service. This can solve connection problems, potentially providing speeds from 100 to 200 Mbps to the region.

In a round table with the media, Ugy Gelephuin said that Starlink’s advent was a blessing for the country, because speed is important with crypto payments. The DK Bank Executive said that although they are not yet completely there in terms of infrastructure, the country is on the right track.
