“I Don’t Want to Take Responsibility for Everything”: Musk Distances Himself from Trump Policies

Elon Musk publicly admitted not approving all the policies of the Trump administration, after having officially ended his short but turbulent as head of the Ministry of Government (DOGE), the controversial agency created by President Donald Trump to reduce federal spending and reduce bureaucracy.
Trump made a glowing farewell to the billionaire: “It will be his last day, but not really, because he will always be with us, helping all the way,” posted Trump on Trum on Thursday, describing Musk as “formidable”.
But in an interview with Sunday morning of CBS, Musk indicated a more complex relationship with the White House.

“I am a little stuck in an obligation,” he said. “I do not want to express themselves against the administration, but I also do not want to assume responsibility for everything that the administration does.”
The commentary marks one of Musk’s most direct recognition of tension between his personal opinions and the aggressive agenda pursued by the government of the second term of Trump. While Tesla’s CEO has long defended the leading government and lined up with Trump on deregulation, his recent remarks suggest discomfort with political benefits and the political leadership in Washington.
The ambitious DOGE agenda and the impact of division
Musk was exploited to direct DOGE shortly after Trump’s return, promising to bring the effectiveness of Silicon Valley to the federal government. In a few weeks, DOGE decided to eliminate the tens of thousands of federal jobs and to freeze from the agency’s budgets, which prompted legislators, unions and defenders of the public service.

Critics followed DOGE’s activities from the start, many of which said that the ministry has exceeded its mandate, targeting vital services and emptying long -standing agencies with little surveillance or consultation. While Musk defended the wave of cost reduction, he admitted that the agency had quickly become a lightning rod.
“Doge has become the whip for everything,” said Musk. “So, if there was a cup, real or imagined, everyone would blame Doge.”
DOGE initially promised to save billions of dollars in taxpayers, but its own data – already under control – is close to this objective. The program has also aroused criticism of budget experts who say that its accounting methods are opaque and swollen.

Disillusionment with GOP expense plans
Although Musk has entered the government to reduce waste, he said that his efforts were compromised by the very administration he serves. In particular, he expressed his frustration with regard to a set of expenses and taxes led by the Republicans who are currently moving through the Congress. The plan, which adds billions of dollars to the American deficit, comes up against the alleged tax discipline mission of Doge.
“I was disappointed to see the massive spending bill, frankly,” Musk said in the CBS interview. “It undermines the work that the Doge team does.”
This public dissent, however, measured, highlights Musk’s discomfort with the political climate in Washington. He also reflects the limits of his influence within the Trump administration, where populist policies and political opportunity have often prioritized on long -term economic reform.
Despite Musk’s departure, the Trump administration insists that the Doge agenda will continue. Russell Vought, director of the Management and Budget Office, said on CNN on Sunday that the White House is committed to advancing the cuts using “executive tools” and partnerships with the Congress.
“This is a provision that has rarely been used, but that’s it,” he said. “And we intend to use all of these tools. We want Congress to pass where it is necessary; We also have executive tools. ”
Tesla’s brand takes a hit as Musk’s political cost
The role of the Musk government did not come without consequences. Tesla, the jewel of the crown of its commercial empire, has faced increasing public reactions, in particular progressive consumers who have long formed its base. The exhibition halls and cars have been vandalized in recent months, a sign of growing frustration of Musk’s political alignment.
Industry analysts say that Musk’s image as an innovator has taken a hit. “His association with a department of government which has been blamed for generalized job losses has clearly embittered perceptions,” said Daniel McClellan, analyst at Techwatch Global. “These are no longer just cars or rockets – it is ideology.”
The question of whether Musk will return to government in a future role remains uncertain. Trump did not exclude it and Musk did not explicitly closed the door. But for the moment, the technological billionaire seems determined to create a certain distance, if not of Trump personally, then politicians and politics that have made his Doge Experiment one of the most polarizing chapters of his career.
