An Openai engineer has revealed to what extent the company has become a protector of its best talents – in particular those working on the debugging of its cutting -edge AI models – Amid an intensification jamming for the expertise of artificial intelligence in Silicon Valley.
Speaking on the Podcast before Act, Szymon Sidor, Openai technical scholarship holder, described the best fiders of the company as “some of our most common employees”. But before he could finish his sentence, he suddenly stopped, and someone quickly intervened: “no names”. Laughter followed. This moment – although clearly audible in the audio version only of the podcast on Spotify and Apple podcasts – was significantly absent from the video versions downloaded on YouTube and X.
The decision to retain their identity was not incidental. It indicates a broader trend: as competition degenerates in the AI arms race, companies are becoming more and more secret and protective of their high value technical staff – in particular those whose work is essential to advance powerful models of language.

Sidor and the chief scientist of OpenAi data, Jakub Pachocki, who also appeared on the podcast, did not explain why the names were censored. But the reason is obvious. The AI industry is now in the midst of a ferocious talent war, and no business wants to facilitate competitors to identify and poach their best minds.
Nowhere is this battle is no longer aggressive than Meta.
The company led by Mark Zuckerberg has done everything on the construction of its ambitions of superintelligence. Meta has paid billions into AI infrastructure and trained its own superintendent laboratory – an elite group of researchers focused on the development of general artificial intelligence (AG). For staff, the company has launched an aggressive recruitment campaign, offering wages and compensation packages for AI scientists worth $ 100 million. In January, the CEO of Openai, Sam Altman, admitted publicly that Meta had tried to attract his researchers with such offers.

Meta has already hired major hires. He poache Shengjia Zhao, co-creator of Chatgpt and former principal scientist in Openai. Internally, the reports suggest that Meta retains a growing list of potential recruits in rival laboratories, highlighting the calculated nature of its recruitment campaign.
The benefits are obvious throughout the industry. AI companies, in particular those working on fundamental models, are increasingly restoring internal disclosure and limit the public exposure of staff. OPENAI, for example, no longer updates its team page on its website, and managers were invited to avoid breathtaking key contributors during public appearances or podcasts.
Even companies formerly known for the promotion of open collaboration have brought back. Google Deepmind, Anthropic, XAI and IFPLE AI have all strengthened internal NDAs or introduces policies restricting staff to appear in the media without prior authorization. The objective is to avoid giving competitors a roadmap to their main engineering teams.

The secret also reshapes the culture of AI. This was once a university environment where the breakthroughs and talents were openly celebrated were transformed into a guarded corporate battlefield. Junior trainees and researchers who would generally be highlighted in published articles or product announcements are now increasingly anonymous.
With thousands of thousands of future economic value projected from the AI, people who can refine, delete and evolve these models have become more precious than the models themselves. This is particularly true in debugging, a process that has proven to be crucial to align the behavior of the AI and prevent catastrophic failures of the model.
Sidor d’Openai suggested that the company had quietly hired more people with elite debugging skills, treating them as prized assets. But unlike the early years of AI development, their names will remain outside the file. Because in the gold rush of today’s AI, knowing who works on models can be just as precious as knowing how they work.
