Major Film Studios Sue AI Firm For Alleged Copyright Infringement
Disney and Universal continued the artificial intelligence company Midjourney for copyright violation compared to its generator of images powered by AI.
In a legal complaint filed Wednesday in Los Angeles, the entertainment giants accused the middle of the family of using works linked to the characters protected by copyright to form its model of great language (LLM) and the distribution of images of the characters protected by copyright.
There are already several judicial cases against the companies of AI deposited by authors and artists for alleged copyright violation; However, this is the first time that major film studios have been placed in the legal saga of AI.
Star Wars, Marvel, the characters of the Simpsons copied
Among the works that would have been copied without authorization are characters from Star Wars, Marvel, Lion King and Disney Simpsons, as well as Boss Baby and Shrek franchises.
The complaint indicates that users can subscribe to the Midjourney image service and invite it to create images of the work protected by copyright, which can be downloaded and used.
Disney said that by using the works protected by copyright, then distributing images that “incorporate and manifestly copy” famous people without “investing a penny in their creation”, Midjourney is a “copyright box and a background tank”.
The costume also claims Midjourney copies and uses the characters protected by copyright to market and promote its image service.
Attempts at resolution failed
Disney alleges that he tried to resolve the situation with Midjourney before launching legal action by asking the cabinet to adopt technical measures to prevent the generation of works protected by copyright.
“Instead, Midjourney has chosen to double her illegal actions by publishing and promoting even more recent versions of her image service and teasing his IA commercial video service which will soon be published,” said Disney in the costume.
Disney also alleges that Midjourney has already implemented technological measures to prevent the distribution and public display of violent images related to nudity, which, according to Disney, could easily be used to prevent the copy of his works.
“Midjourney controls the content protected by copyright that he selects, copies and includes in his image service, and he has the means to implement protective measures to prevent in progress copy, public display and distribution of the works of complainants,” said Disney.

Disney and Universal asked the court a preliminary injunction to prevent Midjourney from offering its image and video generation service without measures to prevent users from creating images of works protected by copyright.
Midjourney did not immediately respond to requests for comments.
AI companies face growing legal challenges
Midjourney is not the first Cabinet of AI to face legal action for an alleged copyright violation. Twelve American copyright cases against Openai and Microsoft were consolidated in New York in March.
Meanwhile, three authors have filed an in progress against Anthropic for copyright violation last August, alleging that the company used data sets containing pirated versions of their works to form its Claude de LLMS family.
