Nigeria and Africa Must Learn from the EU Playbook on Big Tech

The European Union continues to collect: “Wednesday, the European Commission, the EU executive branch, announced that the mother company of Google, alphabet, was in violation of the law on digital markets (DMA), a historic law designed to curb monopolistic practices in the technological sector. Judged that the Google Play Store prevents developers from directing consumers to alternative services, preventing them from providing cheaper payment methods outside the Google ecosystem. “”

If you have a blog, you will agree that the most boring “currency” is traffic as measured by Google. Around 2018, if 1000 visitors gave you to say $ 20 per month, you may need 10,000 visitors for the same $ 20. In other words, this traffic currency is devalued to multiple. Of course, blame the competition, but when you look at the benefits of these great public tic services, you will agree that it is nothing other than the positioning of power.

I support the work of the European Union on this subject because we cannot live in a world where all the powers of digital trade are controlled by tiny business fractions. The state of mind of “Onye Aghana Nwanne Ya” [do not leave your brethren behind] is a philosophy of development that I admire, and it is time that we find ways to make it global.

Nigeria must push and demand changes because if we continue this way, nothing will change for our digital companies. Get other African countries and challenge the status quo as the EU does. See how NG, Wakanow, etc. hotels, etc. have all been disintermediary of lost jobs. I know that Nigerians are enjoying better technology, but it costs youth employment opportunities. I am not against Big Tech but I want great technology with a balance for the inhabitants. The EU has a model and the Nigeria must resume and put pressure for the modifications.

I support these companies but I don’t want them to destroy local businesses. I don’t eat data; Equitable game. But I don’t like the idea that local businesses cannot be discovered without advertising. If we allow it, it is a locked system and a game. When they open Bigtech travel services, local digital companies in this region go. This must change if we hope to have local jobs.

The EU challenges Trump’s pricing threats with the repression of Google and Apple, defining the scene for a major confrontation
