U.S. Lawmakers React to Zelensky and Trump Oval Office Clash

Washington – The main Republicans and Democrats in the Congress were the supporters of the supporters of the Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, but the collapse between the Ukrainian chief and President Donald Trump threatens to change this.
Zelensky had traveled to Washington to sign an agreement that would give the United States access to its mineral wealth while Trump tries to put pressure on Ukraine in an agreement to end war with Russia. Although support for Ukraine has declined among the members of the Congress of the GOP during the three years who followed an invasion of Russia, the key republicans hoped that the agreement would revive American support to kyiv.
Instead, the fallout from an exchange of stormy oval offices between Trump, Zelensky and Vice -President JD Vance have many Republicans – even those who previously supported Ukraine – scraped Zelensky. For other GOP legislators who have long criticized American support to Ukraine, the exchange was an opportunity to rent Trump to have reprimanded the Ukraine leader. And for the Democrats, it is proof that Trump plays in the hands of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Here is what the congress legislators say like the future of Ukraine is at stake:
Republicans who have supported Ukraine in the past
Senable Lindsey Graham, South Carolina
Graham called the meeting of “total and total disaster” and said that he was “never more proud” of Trump.
“What I saw in the oval office was disrespectful and I don’t know if we can do business again with Zelensky.”
Secretary of State Marco Rubio
“Thank you @potus for defending America in a way that no president has never had the courage to do before. Thank you for putting America first. America is with you!
Mike Johnson Chamber, Louisiana
“Death and destruction of the war caused by Russia must stop immediately, and only our American president can put these two countries on the path of lasting peace. President Zelensky had to recognize this and accept the extraordinary proposal for a partnership on the mineral rights that President Trump put on the table. What we have witnessed in the oval office today is an American president who put America first. »»
REPRESENTATIVE. Don Bacon, Nebraska
“A bad day for American foreign policy. Ukraine wants independence, free markets and the rule of law. He wants to be part of the West. Russia hates us and our Western values. We must be clear that we defend freedom. »»
REPRESENTATIVE. Mike Lawler, New York
“Diplomacy is difficult and often there are serious differences in opinion and animated exchanges at home. Having this spill in the public was a disaster – especially for Ukraine. »»
REPRESENTATIVE. Brian Fitzpatrick, Pennsylvania
“It was heartbreaking to attend the turn of events that took place during today’s meeting concerning the future of Ukraine. It is time to put aside understandable emotions and return to the negotiation table. »»
Republicans opposed to Ukrainian aid
Senable Josh Hawley, Missouri
“Do not forget: the American Senate has voted several times and for years of billions of dollars of taxpayers in Ukraine without any condition and without real surveillance. It is time for a certain responsibility. “”
Senable Mike Lee, Utah
“Thank you for defending our country and put America first, President Trump and Vice-President Vance!”
Senable Roger Marshall, Kansas
“Not another penny.”
REPRESENTATIVE. Andy Biggs, Arizona
“The dictator Zelensky had the audacity to lack respect for the president @realdonaldtrump and vp @jdvance during what should have been a friendly meeting, and @potus rightly showed him the door. This is the leadership that America has wanted for four years.”
Democrats, who as a party massively support Ukraine
Democratic leader of the Senate Chuck Schumer, New York
“Trump and Vance do the dirty Putin job. The Democrats of the Senate will never stop fighting for freedom and democracy. »»
Democratic leader of the Hakeem Jeffries room, New York
“The meeting of the White House today with the president of Ukraine was appalling and will only serve to embed Vladimir Putin, a brutal dictator. The United States must not reward Russian assault and continue to appease Putin. »»
Sénable Richard Blumenthal, Connecticut
“My strong and passionate hope is that talks can be resumed or restored, and this event will not derail continuous support.”
“I have very strong hopes that the coalition we have at Congress – and it is a very strong bipartite coalition – will be convincing for administration and others that we have long -term participation of national security in Ukraine which warns on the cheeky assault of Putin.”
Senable Amy Klobuchar, Minnesota
“Answer to Vance: Zelensky thanked our country repeatedly both in private and in public. And our country thanks him as well as the Ukrainian patriots who resisted a dictator, buried theirs and prevented Putin from walking directly in the rest of Europe. Shame on you. “
Sénable Chris Murphy, Connecticut
“It was a planned ambush designed to embarrass President Zelensky to benefit Vladimir Putin. It was an embarrassment. It was an abomination. What you looked at was the American power destroyed in the world while everyone looks at President Trump becoming a lapdog for a brutal dictator in Moscow. »»
