The US Social Security Administration (SSA) will move all public communications to the X social media platform in the midst of labor clippings recommended by the Ministry of Government Effectiveness (DOGE), led by the owner X Elon Musk.
According to anonymous sources that have met with Wired, the government agency will no longer publish its customary letters and press releases to communicate public changes, based on X as the main form of communication towards the public.
The change comes as the SSA reduces its workforce by 57,000 employees to around 50,000 to reduce costs and improve operational efficiency. The agency published this declaration in February 2025:
“The SSA worked with a regional structure made up of 10 offices, which is no longer durable. The agency will reduce the regional structure in all the components of the agency with four regions. The organizational structure of the seat is also obsolete and ineffective. ”
Elon Musk, the chief of Doge, accused the social security system of distributing billions of dollars in unjustified payments, a complaint resolved by the White House. Musk’s comments have aroused intense debate on the future of the retirement program and sustainable public spending.

DOGE targets American government agencies in staff
The Government Ministry of Efficiency is an unofficial government agency responsible for identifying and slowing down public spending, allegedly wasted thanks to budget and personnel discounts.
In March, DOGE began investigating the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and had access to its internal systems, including data benchmarks.
SEC officials reported their cooperation with DOGE and said the regulatory agency would work closely to provide any relevant information requested.

DOGE also proposed to reduce the workforce Revenue Service (IRS) by 20%. The reduction in the workforce could have an impact up to 6,800 IRS employees and be implemented by May 15 – exactly a month after 2024 federal taxes are due.
Musk and Doge’s proposals to bring the expenses back to reduce budgets and reduce the size of the federal workforce.
